Microsoft Bing gaining market share

Independent research suggests that Bing has cornered 12.7% of the market in the 12 months since it launched.
However Google has 62.6% and Yahoo 18.9%, according to figures from ComScore.
At a Microsoft summit to discuss Bing’s progress, the search engine’s executives admitted that there was “a long road ahead” for the site.
“There is something that we are doing that is clearly resonating but that said we are a low share player,” Satya Nadello of Microsoft’s online division told BBC News.

Adobe Releases Emergency Patch

Adobe Systems has released an emergency security update to fix 17 vulnerabilities in its Reader and Acrobat applications, including two critical bugs that are being exploited by hackers in the wild.
The vulnerabilities were first reported by Adobe on 4 June, along with another critical vulnerability in its Flash player, which was patched within a few days.
The security patch for Acrobat and Reader had been scheduled for release on 13 June, but was moved forward by the company because the vulnerabilities addressed were being exploited by hackers to install malware onto end users …

Google Chrome Browser Gets a Built-in Flash Player

Users of Google Chrome on Linux, Mac and Windows machines were automatically upgraded Thursday to a new browser version that addresses several security bugs and features a fully integrated Flash multimedia player for the first time. Google Vice President of Engineering Linus Upson believes browser users will benefit in several different ways from Chrome’s integration of Adobe Systems’ Flash technology for the web.

BBC Project Canvas plans

The Trust has concluded its assessment of Project Canvas, the joint venture between the BBC and five other partners to develop and promote a common standard that would allow digital terrestrial TV viewers with a broadband connection to watch on-demand services and other internet services without paying a subscription (other than for broadband costs).

Facebook plans for Eastern expansion plans

Facebook is planning to further expand its presence in the eastern markets as its overall growth begins to falter.
The social networking giant is looking to countries like China, Russia, Japan and South Korea for the next phase of expansion.
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg admitted that although the platform was growing at a massive rate, its weekly growth rate had fallen significantly.
Zuckerberg added: “Now for the first time we are focused on doing some specific things in specific countries.”
Currently the platform has just over 500 million users world wide

Google patching up Chrome

Google has patched 11 security holes in Chrome as Apple released Safari 5, the latest version of its WebKit rival.
The patch for Chrome 5.0.375.70 on Linux, Mac and Windows is the first fix for Google’s browser since the stable versions of the Mac and Linux editions were announced.
The update followed Monday’s Safari 5 from Apple that patched a record 48 vulnerabilities, most of them on WebKit – also used in Chrome. It’s the first major update to Apple’s browser in a year.

Canonical developing Ubuntu OS tablet edition

Canonical is preparing a version of the Ubuntu OS for tablet computers as the company looks to extend its presence in the mobile world.
Canonical tablets with the Ubuntu OS are projected to be available in early 2011; there has been no information on any of the OEM hardware that Canonical will be using.
The tablet OS will be based on Ubuntu’s upcoming version 10.10, which is currently code-named Maverick Meerkat. This version is expected to be released within a matter of months for the Desktop, Servers and Netbooks.

Adobe Flash Player updates to v10.1

Automatic updates of the Adobe Flash Player have started going out today around the world. The update fixes a number of flaws that were mentioned in a recent article; one of the bugs fixed is in which an attacker could take control of a remote system via Adobe Flash Player.
If you want to make sure you have this update, visit Adobe to check your flash player version. If you don’t have the 10.1 version then you can now head to the Adobe Flash download to update.
